Cost-efficient embossing of superior quality coins and medals

Modification of the GRABENER Coin and Medal Embossing Press, GMP model series, has created an outstanding machine that measures up like no other to metting the exacting requirements of minting valuable collector's coins and medals.

 

The GRABENER range encompasses coin and medal embossing presses with nominal ratings of 3,600 kN, 6,300 kN and 10,000 kN.

Alongside the manually operated GMP-M model, GRABENER offers the GMP-TK model, with automatic transfer feed and cassette conveying system for highly economical production of large batches.

Gased on the proven design principle of GRABENER knuckle-joint presses, we have implemented a number of requirements and ideas in close cooperation with our customers.

 

The enhanced performance of the press, and the top-quality coins and medals it produces are delighting mints and their customers alike.

Advantages of the GRABENER knuckle-joint system

Typical of GRABENER knuckle-joint presses is the extremely rigid press construction and favourable time-path sequence in the embossing area.

 

The principle:

The press frame fuctions as a ram which is moved downwards by the knuckle-joint. The bolster plate and press housing are rigidly connected to each other.

The advantages:

The softer impact of the die on the coin, compared with other drive types, and the laengthier contact time prolong tool life and improve the embossing of difficult reliefs.

 

Even parts of intricate design can be produced with a single stroke. For top-quality mirror finish, GRABENER coin and medal embossing presses can additionally be equipped for multi-strike operation.

 

Multi-strike for mirror finish

On multi-strike operation, the roll is swung away from the drive cam.

 

The ejector is deactivated for a programmed number of strokes. With a second pneumatic cylinder, the bottom die can be moved into the cleaning position above the ejector.

Upper and lower tool with wedge-type adjustment

The embossing tool consists of an upper and lower tool with wedge-type adjustment. Adjusting the wedge at the upper tool for application of the press force is easily done with repetitive precision with the help of a geared motor.

 

The adjustment path and press force are shown on the operator panel display. With the wedge adjustment at the lower tool, the embossing die can be positioned accurately in the embossing collar.

 

Fast tool change with wedge-type adjustment The  embossing tool consists of an upper and lower tool with wedge-type adjustment.

Fast tool change with hydraulic quick-clamping tool chuck

To minimize tool-change time, we have equipped the press with a hydraulic quick-clamping tool chuck.

 

The embossing die is clamped in the direction of the embossing force to ensure it remains firmly clamped even under load.

 

Lower-cost change parts

Hydraulic tool clamping makes re-tooling easier and quicker. It also allows the use of favourably priced change parts.

 

Upper tool disengagement eliminates dust nuisance on multi-strike operation

The fourfold column-guided upper tool is disengaged from the press frame during multi-strike operation and remains in the embossing collar in contact with the coin.

 

Dust turbulence on opening the tool is avoided.

 

Universal ball joint for adaptation to eccentric relief

Mounting the upper tool in an adjustable universal ball joint allows the die to be adapted for eccentric reliefs.

 

Centering the upper tool through playfree x-y adjustment

The upper tool is centered to the embossing collar from the front with two adjusting screws while it remains under hydraulic pressure from the back.

 

 

Fast changeover to manual feed

Through preselection at the operator panel, the transfer rails move automatically aside and into a parking position at the rear, readying the press for manual feed.

 

Cost-efficient embossing with automatic transfer feed

a cassette conveying system ensures automatic operation without     interruption

the cassette lift makes loading fast and easy

cassettes are positioned automatically

finished coins are deposited in coin trays at the front, the latter remaining

    in cycle with press operation

coins are transported from rear-to-front allowing the operator to     exercise ongoing quality control

the cassette conveying system can be moved away to the rear to allow     optimum access for retooling and maintenance

the press operates continuously, minimizing clutch and brake wear

 

How automatic transfer feed works:

the blanks are separated at the     magazine, the stacked blanks     are held pneumatically

a lift table lowers blank after     blank from the magazine to the     front

synchronously operating     grippers convey the blanks     stepwise to the front

to avoid damaging the blank    surface, the cam-controlled    deposit trays are lowered during    the feed movement

suction devices hold the blanks    in position on the deposit trays

the blanks are blow-deposited    on coin trays at the front
